My name is Santiago, I´am going to tell you about Nelson Mandela.
He was born on July 18, 1918. Mandela served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and he was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. In 1962 Mandela was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges and he was sentenced to life in prison. Following his release from prison on the 11th of February 1990, Mandela let his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994.
Nelson Mandela has received than 250 awards over decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela´s reputation grew steadily. He was accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as anti-apartheid movement gathered strength.He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.
In south Africa he is know as Madiba.
After the 1948 election of the Afrikaner-dominated National Party, which supported the Apartheid policy of racial segregation, Mandela began actively participating in politics.He led prominently in the ANC´s 1952 defiance campaign and the 1955 congress of the people,whose adoption of freedom charter provides the fundamental basic of anti-apaethied cause.
